THE SECOND SEMICONDUCTOR REVOLUTION

By | July 12th, 2019|Categories: Events, People|

ENGINEERS HOUSE, BRISTOL - JUNE 19TH 2019 The plan for the evening was to consider how the silicon design community and the compound semiconductor manufacturing community were at a position to work closer together, or at least with more self-awareness, due to the convergence of technologies in new markets like e-mobility. Here Graphcore’s microprocessors can make sense of vast data sets generated by smart sensors, while compound semiconductors have the speed and flexibility necessary to manage huge data in real time. Engineers House Our venue, Engineers House, was completed in 1831, the same year [...]

NORTH WEST HYDROGEN REVOLUTION DINNER

By | April 29th, 2019|Categories: Events, People|

TOWN HALL, LIVERPOOL, APRIL 10TH 2019 The purpose was to bring together a range of senior executives involved in developing and promoting a hydrogen economy in the North West. Liverpool is building a powerful case for government support led by our partners at the dinner - the North West Business Leadership Forum, Peel Holdings and the Liverpool City Region Combined Authority. The Venue The venue reflected the period in Britain’s mercantile history when Liverpool was the dominant port trading with the New World – an impressive late Georgian building with enormously high ceilings [...]

FELLOWSHIP AWARD DINNER

LONDON - November 20, 2018 Venue: THE ARMOURERS AND BRASIERS HALL, City of London The Armourers Hall’s walls are lined with relics of a medieval past, it also has the sense of Victorian romanticism, which is accounted for by the fact the present Hall was completed in 1841 and then heavily ‘gothicised’ in 1871. The Armourers and Brasiers’ Company however dates back to 1322 and has been on the present site, amazingly, since 1346. What changes therefore it has seen, with all the glass and steel buildings around it now! Sir Henry Bessemer [...]

RISING TO THE BATTERY CHALLENGE DINNER

Oxford Said Business School, October 31st 2018 The dinner took place in the West Wing of the Said Business School, also known as The Thatcher Business Education Centre, which was completed in 2013. It was a break from our usual choice of venue where we try to make a link to the grandeur of our Victorian industrial heritage, compatible with the image that Bessemer evokes. The new-fangled West Wing building had a security system to prevent unauthorised entry, not surprisingly since the MBAs apparently pay up to £3000 a day to attend courses. [...]

POWER UP THE UK FROM SOUTH WALES DINNER

By | September 13th, 2018|Categories: Events, News, People|

Cardiff City Hall, Sept 13th, 2018. THE VENUE Cardiff City Hall looks more like the Tuileries Palace in Paris than a City Hall. The entrance is relatively modest but opens into a marbled hall that could find itself at home in Buckingham Palace. There were over 60 attendees, the largest for a dinner so far, putting some pressure on the facilities. The tight space however ensured we enjoyed our usual collegiate atmosphere. Aim of evening The aim was: 1) To promote the Compound Semiconductor Cluster in South Wales; 2) To link other centres [...]

OXFORD SPACE ODYSSEY DINNER

By | July 4th, 2018|Categories: Events, People|

Rhodes House, July 4th 2018. The dinner took place in the vast timber-framed hall at Rhodes House, an echo of England’s Imperial past with Oxford whimsicality added. The theme of Space was an interesting one to consider in such a ‘spacious’ environment. The Oxford area encompassing Culham and Harwell is a leader in the emerging field of ‘New space’ and the leading centre for ‘dramatic’ engineering, such as fusion power and rocket technology. Our principal speaker, Lord Willetts, is a political ‘Space Leader’, due to his earlier role in government supporting the sector [...]

FELLOWSHIP AWARD DINNER, LONDON, NOV. 9TH 2017

By | November 9th, 2017|Categories: Events, News, People|Tags: |

Venue: THE INSTITUTE OF MECHANICAL ENGINEERS, One Birdcage Walk, SWI The venue for the dinner has been witness to the pride and success of mechanical engineering since the nineteenth century. Sir Henry Bessemer became a member of the Institute in July 1861 when he gave his address as the Bessemer Steel Works, Carlisle Street, Sheffield, which is where he had established his steel works around 1859. The current IMechE building was opened in 1899, the year after Sir Henry Bessemer’s death. When his name was removed from the registrar he was still using [...]
